RAIN STOPS PLAY FOR PACIFIC-FORD
After an extremely encouraging practice session for Andrea Montermini and Bertrand Gachot resulting in times of 1m39.975s (16) and 1m43.946s (17) respectively, the Pacific Fords were optimistic that this afternoon would deliver some even more competitive times.
Unfortunately, rain hampered progress, and left the two Pacific Fords garage-bound for most of the one-hour qualifying session. Bertrand Gachot's car had been committed to dry settings in the hope that the weather would allow him to go out and better yesterday's time of 1m36.076s, but as it didn't dry-up sufficiently, he remained at 21st on the grid for tomorrow's race.
It was imperative that Andrea Montermini set a qualifying time this afternoon and although the conditions were far from ideal, he went out on wets at the beginning of the session. After a spectacular spin aquaplaning out of Copse on his second lap, he is now 24th on tomorrow's grid with a time of 1m52.398s.
BERTRAND GACHOT (F) - 21st, 1m36.076s:
"I had hoped for a dry session to improve on my time from yesterday, and I am confident that had it not been wet, I would have made good progress. In practice this morning, I was experiencing a lot of understeer, but after a front wing extension, it was better. So I hope for a dry day tomorrow and a good race."
ANDREA MONTERMINI (I) - 24th, 1m52.398s:
"I was much happier with the car in practice and so it was a shame that there was so much rain in qualifying, but I went out to set a time and had a spin which I think the crowd enjoyed - thankfully there was no damage to the car, so I now hope that the race tomorrow is dry and that I do well for the Team."
