MONTERMINI 21ST DESPITE DELAYS
Andrea Montermini and Giovanni Lavaggi have provisionally qualified 21st and 24th for Sunday's Hungarian Grand Prix, both Pacific drivers reporting balance problems throughout the day and Montermini overcoming a spin to set his best time on his final qualifying lap.
This morning's practice session saw both drivers complain about an understeer problem, and the team worked throughout practice and the break before qualifying to find a better set-up. The balance problems on Andrea's car caused him to have a spin in practice, but he recovered and was able to return to the pit lane.
Qualifying brought an improvement in the balance of both cars, although Andrea's second qualifying run was ended when the session was stopped due to Alesi's accident. When he finally went out to complete his final qualifying run Andrea suffered a spin at the entry to the first chicane, but he was able to keep the engine running and on the next lap set his best time.
ANDREA MONTERMINI (I) : 21st - 1m25.465s
"We had a big grip and balance problem this morning, but we were able to improve and find more time. When I went out for my second run we had the red flag, so I wasted one lap on the new tyres. My spin at the chicane happened because I came into it a little too quickly, but fortunately I was able to keep going and do my time on the next lap. For sure we can be quicker tomorrow."
Team mate Giovanni Lavaggi also reported an improvement in his car between practice and qualifying.
GIOVANNI LAVAGGI (I) : 24th - 1m27.342s
"We had very bad understeer this morning, but we did a lot of work to improve the car and it was very different to drive in qualifying. It was much better balanced, although I still had some understeer and oversteer, and I had to get used to this different set-up."
