PACIFICS IMPROVE TIMES BUT SLIP TO 22ND & 24TH

The Pacific-Fords driven by Andrea Montermini and Giovanni Lavaggi will start tomorrow's Hungarian Grand Prix from 22nd and 24th places on the grid, their cars lapping more quickly than in first qualifying but Andrea slipping back one place.

The team had a trouble free day, although both cars had a scheduled engine change between practice and qualifying. Both drivers reported that their cars were better balanced than yesterday, but Andrea found his car to have lost grip in final qualifying.

The only incident in qualifying occured when Andrea found the Sauber of Heinz-Harald Frentzen catching him very quickly but was unable to move off the racing line in order to give the German the best line. They amicably discussed the incident after qualifying finished.

ANDREA MONTERMINI (I) : 22nd - 1m24.371s

"This morning the car felt very good, particularly coming out of the corners, and we had made a real improvement. Unfortunately the car was not so good in qualifying. We had made some changes, and basically I could not get on the power early enough, and I lost a lot of time. The incident with Frentzen was simple - I looked in my mirrors and he was right behind me and going quickly. I couldn't pull out of the way, but I did try to give him as much room as possible."

Giovanni Lavaggi improved his qualifying time by almost 0.8secs, and reported that the car had been improved today.

GIOVANNI LAVAGGI (I) : 24th - 1m26.570s

"We improved the set-up of the car and found time both this morning and this afternoon, which was good. Obviously we need to improve even more, but I think that we have good set-up for the race and the objective now is to concentrate on tomorrow and to make certain that we finish."
