IMPROVED PACIFICS CLOSE THE GAP
Improvements to both the Pacific-Fords of Andrea Montermini and Giovanni Lavaggi resulted in much faster lap times today, Andrea setting the 19th fastest time in practice and 21st in qualifying - only two tenths behind Inoue's Arrows-Hart, and close to the pace of the Minardi-Fords. Giovanni also reported his car improved today, but was disappointed to slip back to 24th position.
This morning's practice session went well, Andrea setting a time of 1m30.782s, well over one second faster than in first qualifying. In final qualifying he went faster still, setting his best time on his very last lap - despite losing the brakes during the course of it.
Giovanni set a time of 1m32.580s in practice this morning, but his hopes of finding more time in qualifying were ended by an on-going balance problem.
ANDREA MONTERMINI (I) : 21st - 1m30.721s
"The car felt really good on my final run, and I was going to do a time in the low 1m30s for sure, to put me in the top 20, but the brakes went completely and I lost easily half a second. I did a 1m30.7s on my previous lap without trying, and the telemetry shows I was much quicker at the beginning of the last lap. My only other problem was that my second set of tyres were very unbalanced, so that was a wasted run. I hope that the car feels as good in the race tomorrow, because then I really think we could have a good result."
GIOVANNI LAVAGGI (I) : 24th - 1m32.470s
"What can I say? We made the car a little better, but I still had some understeer and my car is just not as quick as it should be in the corners. It is disappointing to slip back to 24th, but I suppose for me the important thing now is to concentrate on making sure we have a good race set-up and that we finish tomorrow's race."
